Decorating Tips: Expensive Pieces Should be Classics

Have you ever looked at something, and thought that because it was so simple it was perfect?  Most of the time our lives are so complicated, that we like to just be able to stop worrying about matching everything.  Look around your house, what is your decorating style?  If you're like me, your decorating style changes with the season or what your mood is.  For my furniture, I have a lot of basic pieces that can blend in with a lot of different styles.  I use the walls as my canvas, and it seems like I always have wet paint.

Right now, the walls are a blue that doesn't always look blue; sometimes it looks green sometimes it looks gray; it just depends on the light.  Because I like to change the way the room looks pretty often, when I buy big purchases, I have to choose neutral pieces that will look good even if I change my style.  I've learned that it's better to buy classic pieces. These are timeless pieces that will always look good, whether my walls are blue, purple, black or pink.

For example, I recently picked up a set of Lenox eternal china, which is classic porcelain china that will go with any design.  Lenox eternal china is basic bone white china, with a golden stripe around it.  What is great about this pattern is that I'll never get sick of them.  They're simple, elegant, and I can use them if I'm serving macaroni and cheese or a five course dinner.

Whatever your decorating style is, when you're making big purchases you should probably think about getting classics.  Classics are items that will look good with whatever you put them with, and are really good investment pieces.
